Judge dismisses Grand Traverse Band invasive species lawsuit

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and five states lost a lawsuit aimed at preventing an invasive species from entering the Great Lakes.

Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania sued the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District in Chicago, Illinois. They asked for water barriers to prevent Asian carp from moving to the lakes.

The tribe intervened but Judge John Tharp dismissed the lawsuit. He said he can't force the placement of barriers because doing so would violate federal law.
