Democrat Martin Heinrich wins open Senate seat in New Mexico
Wednesday, November 7, 2012
Democrat Martin Heinrich (D) defeated Republican
Heather Wilson (R) for an open U.S. Senate seat in New Mexico.
Heinrich has served in the U.S. House since 2009. He represents New Mexico's 1st congressional district, which includes a large urban Indian population in Albuquerque.
During his time in Congress, he's had a favorable Indian record, including the recent passage of the H.R.205,
the Helping Expedite and Advance Responsible Tribal Homeownership Act (HEARTH)
Act. The bill makes it easier for tribes to use their land for housing and economic development projects.
Heinrich's victory helps maintain a Democratic majority in the Senate.
The seat is being vacated by the retiring Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico).
The state's senior senator will be Sen. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico), who sits on the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
