Winnebago Tribe backs Bob Kerrey for Senate seat in Nebraska

The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska is backing Bob Kerrey for U.S. Senate.

After meeting with Kerrey, who previously served in the Senate from 1989 through 2001, the tribal council voted unanimously to endorse his campaign. He is the right candidate for the tribe and for Indian Country, Chairman John Blackhawk said.

“Senator Kerrey stood with us while we worked to improve our health and well-being by building our treaty hospital and now it is time for us to to stand with him," Blackhawk said.

“Bob Kerrey found his way to Winnebago when others found their way around it. He will be a real asset to Indian Country and all Nebraskans should stand with him," added Frank Lamere, a tribal member and Democratic activist.

Kerrey is facing Republican Deb Fischer in the election. Polls show a tight race and one that could affect the balance of power in the Senate, currently controlled by Democrats.
