Tribes working to boost turnout among Native American voters
Thursday, November 1, 2012
Tribes and tribal organizations are working to increase turnout among American Indian and Alaska Native voters.
Native Americans only make up around 1 percent of eligible voters in the U.S.
But in certain states, like Montana, South Dakota and New Mexico, they can make or break a candidate.
“One vote may seem insignificant, but when you add 10 votes, 100 votes or 1,000 votes, that becomes a number that people will look at,” Santa Clara Pueblo Gov. Walter Dasheno told the Associated Press. “More people are becoming conscious of the significance of one vote.”
The National Congress of American Indians wants to bring 3 million Native Americans to the polls.
