Wind energy development has increased dramatically in Mexico but Indian communities say they are seeing few benefits.
Of the 17 wind farms in Mexico, 17 are located in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
The area is home to Zapotec and Huave towns that have opposed development.
“We are asking these multinationals to please get out of these places,” Irma Ordonez, a Zapotec activist, told the Associated Press. “They want to steal our land, and not pay us what they should.”
This year alone, wind power output in Mexico has increased 119 percent.
