Cherokee Nation to shut office in Washington DC at end of year
Friday, October 19, 2012
The Cherokee Nation is shutting down its Washington, D.C., office at the end of this year, the tribe's newspaper reports.
The Cherokee Nation Washington Office costs about $350,000 a year, Secretary of State Charles Head said. Closing it and hiring a lobbying firm to perform similar services should cut those costs in half.
“Although our guys were hardworking…we think we can improve our position in Washington with a higher level of experience," Head told The Cherokee Phoenix.
The tribe is hiring Cornerstone Government Affairs. Clients include the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa and the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana, according to the firm's website.
