Pacific Northwest tribes oppose coal terminals along the coast

Tribes in the Pacific Northwest are opposing plans to build a series of coal exporting terminals along the West Coast in Washington and Oregon.

The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians passed a resolution that calls for a environmental impact statement to cover all of the ports. Currently, the federal government wants to treat each project separately.

The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission supports the resolution. Tribes are worried about the impact of the terminals on fishing rights and sacred sites.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is holding the first scoping hearing on Saturday, October 27, in Washington.
