Editorial: Officers from Pojoaque Pueblo help to keep the peace

"The ruckus up north about Pojoaque Pueblo’s tribal police powers is unfortunate.

After all, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office lacks enough deputies to patrol the wide open spaces adequately. Pojoaque Gov. George Rivera put it best: “Today, 20 police officers are no longer protecting the non-Indian public. Dedicated police officers and the general public are at risk.” We urge both Gov. Rivera and Sheriff Robert Garcia to work out issues over who is liable for policing gone wrong. That way, trained tribal police officers can regain their authority to deal with crimes affecting non-Indians. Two deputies, and whatever state police officers might be patrolling, are not enough coverage in that portion of Santa Fe County."
