A controversial plaque that tells the story of an Indian woman who was thrown into a lake will remain out of sight for now, The Collegian of
South Dakota State University reports.
The plaque accompanied a statue of an Indian woman. It claims the woman fell in love with a non-Indian soldier and warned him of an attack by her tribe.
The betrayal led her tribe to throw her in a lake, according to the plaque. The story appears to be have been invented and has been presented with "no citation or reference to fact," Richard Meyers, the director of tribal outreach at SDSU, told the paper.
Officials are deciding what to do with the plaque.
