Village debates appeal after losing Oneida Nation taxation case

The Oneida Nation has prevailed in a taxation lawsuit but the village of Hobart, Wisconsin, is considering an appeal.

Judge William C. Griesbach ruled that the village's storm water management fees constitute an "impermissible tax" on the tribe's trust lands. The decision relied on numerous precedents but the village says it won't give up.

“We’re looking at our options. We think our legal positions are pretty clear," Elaine Willman, the director of community development and tribal affairs for the village, told The Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Willman was the leader of an anti-Indian group before she started working for the village.
