Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs sets hearing

The House Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs will hold a hearing next week to discuss taxation of per capita payments.

Individual Indians across the nation are benefiting from billions of dollars in funds through various settlements. Tribes have raised concerns about whether per capita payments are taxable.

The Internal Revenue Service appears to have settled the question with a forthcoming notice that states per capita payments from recent tribal settlements are not taxable. But the House subcommittee, led by Republicans, said it will question a "reportedly new precedent set by the Obama Administration’s Treasury Department to start taxing certain benefits of individual Indian tribal members, including many who are jobless and rely on public assistance."

The hearing will take place Friday, September 14, at 11am in Room 1324 of the Longworth House Office Building. A witness list hasn't been published.
