Oneida Nation father warns of crime woes after son's death

A father from the Oneida Nation who lost his son to violence said crime and gangs are ongoing problem for Indian youth in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Joseph Teller, 50, moved his family to the far side of Green Bay to avoid gangs. His son, Jeremy, 15, had left a gang about a year before he was shot and killed on July 31.

“There’s a lot of Native American young men that need to stop and take a look at what happened. If you follow your Native American traditions, it can help you and possibly prevent something this,” Teller told The Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Seven young people -- all ages 25 and under -- have been arrested in connection with Jeremy's death. His cousin was nearly shot in the same incident.

Jeremy was in the process of enrolling with the Oneida Nation when he was killed.
