Study shows extremely high rate of suicide for Alaska Natives

Alaska Natives are more than twice as likely to commit suicide than non-Natives, according to a report released on Monday.

Based on data from 2003 to 2008, researches found the annual suicide rate among Alaska Natives was 40.4 per 100,000 people. The rate among non-Natives was 17.7 per 100,000.

The rate among Alaska Native males was the highest -- 155.3 per 100,000 people. Young Alaska Natives were also more likely to commit suicide, the study showed.
