The
Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Canada's intelligence agency, has been probing ties between First Nations and companies owned by the Chinese government, The National Post reports.
Chinese companies have been stepping up their discussions with First Nations.
“It’s no secret that China needs every conceivable kind of commodity," activist Calvin Helin told the paper. "All the base metals, lumber, food sources.”
The interest has led CSIS agents to question people about the influence of the Chinese government.
One attorney said he's been approached twice about a memorandum of understanding that a First Nation signed with a company that has Chinese ties.
