The
Bois Forte Band of Chippewa has reclaimed more than 8,000 artifacts that were taken from the reservation in 1948.
University of Minnesota archeologist Lloyd Wilford removed the items, apparently without permission of the tribe or the
Bureau of Indian Affairs. They ended up with the
Minnesota Historical Society, whose leaders decided to return them after a formal request was made by the tribe.
"It's like having a long-lost relative come home," elder Ron Geshick told The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "Very powerful feelings come from these."
The tribe plans to display some of the items.
