New group lobbies Congress to change Indian Child Welfare Act

A new group called the Coalition for the Protection of Indian Children and Families is lobbying Congress to amend the Indian Child Welfare Act.

The group wants to limit the time for a biological parent to revoke consent for an adoption, The Tulsa World. The group also says Indian birth parents should be able to choose where a child goes, even if goes against a tribe's wishes.

"This defeats the entire purpose" of ICWA, Chrissi Ross Nimmo, the assistant attorney general for the Cherokee Nation, told the paper in response.

The group arose out of a dispute involving a Cherokee girl who was returned to her Cherokee father in Oklahoma. The case is before the South Carolina Supreme Court.

The group is hosting a meeting at the U.S. Capitol today, according to a press release.
