County won't dispute Chumash Tribe land-into-trust application

The board of supervisors in Santa Barbara County, California, voted 3-2 against fighting a land-into-trust application for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.

A large crowd turned out for a public meeting on the issue. The tribe made a big showing.

"I'm ashamed to have to come up here and fend for who I am, for who our people are", said an upset Chairman Vincent Armenta told the board, KCOY-TV reported.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the tribe's application for about seven acres. It's already been the subject of one lawsuit and opponents could still file their own appeals or lawsuits.
