New Mexico Pueblos explore impacts of state and federal policy

The 19 Pueblos of New Mexico opened an exhibit that explores the past 100 years of state and federal Indian policy.

The exhibit is housed at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque. Starting with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, It covers four major polices that affected the Pueblos -- assimilation, allotment, relocation and removal.

"It's important to teach the next generation so that they too going into their own futures can understand what elements they have the ability to change," Travis Suazo, the exhibition project manager, told the Associated Press.

The exhibit features photos, video and artifacts like pottery and personal items.
