Makah Nation acquires ceded lands with $25M trust settlement

The Makah Nation of Washington has used about half of its $25 million trust settlement to reacquire some ancestral territory.

The tribe spent $12.5 million on about 3,000 acres that were ceded by the 1855 Treaty of Neah Bay. “We’re increasing our land base,” Chairman Micah McCarty told The Peninsula Daily News.

In 2005, the tribe spent $6 million on 3,811 acres that were ceded by the treaty.
