"In the four years of its existence, the Dancers of the Plains Cultural Exhibition has welcomed home four Indian tribes native to Nebraska: Pawnee, Arikara, Otoe-Missouria and Ponca.
It is with pride that Nebraskans who attend the exhibition this weekend at the Great Platte River Road Archway welcome home the Southern Poncas from Oklahoma and salute the Northern Poncas of Nebraska.
Many Nebraskans are familiar with the Poncas’ contributions to our state and to the constitutional laws of our nation.
In 1877, the Ponca Tribe was forcibly removed from its homelands along the shores of the Niobrara and Missouri rivers in northeast Nebraska. Members followed the Trail of Tears to Indian Territory in Oklahoma, where scores died from disease and starvation."
