"The state ban on Native American high school team mascots and logos is based on research in the social sciences purporting to show that these symbols may depress the self-esteem of Native American children.
But in Siletz they seem not to have noticed this. Judging by their complaint against the new rule, expressed in a statement from the tribe on Tuesday, they do not share the view that the reflection of their Indian culture in their high school name and symbols has a harmful effect."
