Kickapoo Tribe in Texas no longer opposes mine in border town

The Kickapoo Tribe in Texas is no longer opposing plans for a coal mine near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The tribe was part of a coalition against the mine and had participated in public meetings as recently as two weeks ago. But the tribe withdrew for unexplained reasons.

“It was just a tremendous 180, and I don’t have any firm information over what caused them to do that," George Baxter, who is part of a group that opposes the mine, told The Texas Tribune.

The tribe is based in Eagle Pass, where Dos Republicas Coal Partnership, a Mexican company, wants to develop 6,300 acres. The tribe also has members across the border.
