Montana tribe again moves toward agreement at bison range
Wednesday, May 16, 2012
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana are once again moving toward an agreement at the National Bison Range.
The tribe wants to handle some functions at the range, which is located entirely within the boundaries of the Flathead Reservation.
The herd at the range descends from animals that were raised by tribal members.
Prior agreements, including the original one that was negotiated by the Bush administration, were struck down in court.
The Obama administration issued a public notice that starts up the process again.
A group called Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility has opposed the agreements with the tribe.
