Jicarilla Apache woman identified as girl in photo from 1987

A member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation reclaimed a photo that was taken in 1987 after it was published on the front page of The Farmington Daily Times on Monday.

Shawna Benally had just won the title of Jicarilla Centennial Princess when the photo was taken. She's in the dress she wore during her "Keesda" ceremony.

"It's the traditional dress used for a coming-out feast, when a girl becomes a woman. She can't wear the dress until that time," Benally told the paper.

Benally's family had a copy of the photo but she always wondered what happened to the original. Janel Jones, whose late husband ran the photo studio where it was taken, wanted to return it to Benally.
