Bill to limit tribal role in Oklahoma appears dead for now (

SB 1050, a bill that limits the role of tribes in setting state environmental policies, appears dead for now.

Rep. Phil Richardson (R), the chairman of the House of Representatives Agriculture, Wildlife and Environment Committee. refused to bring up the bill for a hearing on Wednesday. He said he was concerned about tribal-state relations, The Oklahoman reported.

Sen. Greg Treat (R), the sponsor of the bill, said his bill was aimed at limiting the role of Environmental Protection Agency in state decisions. But a rider in federal law already prevents tribes in Oklahoma from developing their own air and water regulations without agreement from the state.

No other tribes are subject to the same restriction.
