Echo Hawk leaves BIA to be sole Indian in Mormon leadership

Larry Echo Hawk is leaving the Bureau of Indian Affairs for a leadership position within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Echo Hawk, 63, a member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma, will be the sole American Indian serving as an LDS Church general authority, The Deseret News reported. He will be a part of the "First Quorum of the Seventy," according to the church.

Echo Hawk was confirmed as assistant secretary for Indian Affairs in May 2009. He was the longest serving leader of the BIA since the Clinton era.
