Editorial: Cabazon Band seeks to meet air quality standards

"After all the suffering the people of Mecca have gone through with hazardous waste being processed in the small east valley town, it's good to see the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians supporting higher standards if the operation is to begin again.

Tribal Chairman David Roosevelt says that Western Environmental Inc., which operates the resource recovery park, should continue to operate under federal regulators. That's the way it works under the rules of sovereignty.

But he also agrees the plant should comply with California's more restrictive definition of what constitutes hazardous waste, compared to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. That's good. Our elected representatives should continue to press the EPA to raise that bar."
