"“We are still here.” It’s a phrase you hear in Native American communities around the country — a reminder that indigenous people are more than just a long-ago chapter in U.S. history.
We are still here, but we too often are portrayed as only part of the past. That’s why I’m happy in today’s column to tell you about another exciting program of our tribal government’s education department.
An art exhibit, titled “Portraits of a People,” will be on display at the Lompoc Museum’s Centeno Gallery until May 27. You’ll be able to view original pieces of artwork by a dozen artists from the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians."
