Alaska tribe to receive child welfare funds under agreement

The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska will receive about $50,000 in child welfare funds pending final resolution of a lawsuit in state court.

The tribe successfully sued the state in order to gain recognition of its child support orders. While the case was being heard, about two years of child support judgments were held up.

The agreement now allows the money to be released to custodial parents or the tribe. "It is critical that Central Council and the State work together to the best interest of our children," President Edward K. Thomas said in a press release.

A final judgement in the case is expected to be issued soon.
