The
Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation in Washington announced a $193 million trust management settlement.
The tribe filed suit in federal court in 2005, seeking an accounting of its trust funds. After negotiations with the Obama administration, the tribal council approved a settlement, one of the largest in history.
"After careful review and deliberation, the Council has agreed to accept and approve the proposed settlement," Chairman Michael O. Finley in a press release. "The next step in the process is formal Department of Justice approval. We have every reason to expect this will happen within the next two weeks."
The tribe expects to distribute a portion of the settlement to its members and to use the funds to restore forests, rangeland, and other natural resources.
