Pala Band removes 15 percent of membership from the rolls

The Pala Band of Mission Indians of California has removed a significant percentage of people from its rolls.

The tribe just disenrolled 154 people, or 15 percent of the membership. That's a lot larger than the eight people who were removed last year.

Among those who were kicked out are the children of former chairman King Freeman. He has said his family was disenrolled for political reasons.

The tribe is defending its right to determine its membership but says appeals are allowed before the disenrollment becomes final.
