Gila River Indian Community prepares for vote on highway

Members of the Gila River Indian Community of Arizona will go the polls next Tuesday to express their views on a proposed highway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation wants to extend Loop 202. But the proposed route would affect South Mountain, a sacred site.

Running the highway through the reservation, however, could protect the site. So tribal members are being asked whether they support the idea.

"We (could) actually sit at the table with ADOT and let them know our concerns," Devin Redbird, the founder of Rezistance, which supports the route through the reservation, told The Arizona Republic.
