Indian voting rights an issue with shutdown of USPS facility

Indian voting rights could be affected by the closure of a U.S. Postal Service facility in Tucson, Arizona.

Closing the mail-processing plant will delay distribution of election ballots, according to the recorder in Pima County. The recorder says members of the Tohono O'odham Nation will have less than 10 days to complete and return ballots, compared with nearly 20 days for voters in urban areas.

"There is no question that the changes proposed by the postal service will impact Native American voters far more extensively than the voters in the metropolitan areas," county recorder F. Ann Rodriguez said in a letter, The Arizona Daily Star reported.

The USPS has already proposed closing one post office on the Tohono O'odham Nation.
