Editorial: Samson Cree Nation says 'no more' to gang crimes

If the community and the RCMP can continue to work together, the tragic death of five-year-old Ethan Yellowbird may make a lasting difference for justice and peace on the four reserves at Hobbema.

Three Hobbema youths were charged Tuesday with manslaughter in Ethan's death by stray gunshot as he slept in his parents' bedroom on the Samson Cree Nation July 11, 2011.

The suspects - two in custody and one on the loose - were themselves children of Hobbema, youths known to the police, kids who were in care of the child welfare system, the products of family breakdown.

Mounties say they believe the horrific case is gang-related."
