A journalist is nearing completion of a documentary that focuses on the importance of the horse to the
Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho.
Janet Kern has been working on
Horse Tribe for at least a decade, The Epoch Times reported. The film looks at the horse program that the tribe started in the 1990s, including the involvement of Rudy Shebala, a Navajo man who married a Nez Perce woman.
Shebala is credited with cross-breeding a new horse for the tribe and securing funding to keep the program going. But Kern said his role within the tribe was controversial, culminating in his dismissal after he was arrested for drunken driving.
The tribe eventually tried to auction some of the horses but some of the animals were released by tribal members.
