Members of the
Gila River Indian Community of Arizona will vote next month on a proposed highway route.
The state of Arizona wants to extend the South Mountain Freeway. But the current route has generated controversy because it would displace people from their homes and affect a sacred site.
A route through the reservation, however, could address those concerns. The state would have to negotiate with individual Indian landowners on the exact path.
The vote will take place February 7.
