Oglala Sioux man to lead White House education initiative
Tuesday, December 13, 2011
William Mendoza, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, will lead the new White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education.
President Barack Obama created the initiative through an executive order he signed earlier this month. Mendoza will oversee the effort, which aims to expand education opportunities and improve educational outcomes for American Indian and Alaska Native students.
The initiative will work across all federal agencies and programs that deal with Indian education, from public schools to Bureau of Indian Education schools to tribal colleges and universities.
