The
Navajo Nation said it has reached an agreement with the Obama administration to restore funding to its troubled
Head Start program.
The tribe was told it would only receive $15.3 million. But after discussions with the
U.S. Office of Head Start, funding was restored to the full $29 million.
"The Navajo Nation is finalizing an agreement with the federal government to maintain
the current Navajo Head Start funding level at $29 million for fiscal year 2012,”
President Ben Shelly said in a
press release. “This agreement will ensure services continue to our Navajo children
and families. But, the work does not stop there. We must restructure and reorganize the
program.”
The tribe says it will address numerous deficiencies in the program.
