Sycuan Band seeks to triple the size of small reservation

The Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians of California recently filed a land-into-trust application for 1,350 acres.

If approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the acquisition will triple the size of the tribe's land base. The reservation -- one of the smallest in the region -- stands only at 640 acres and is largely mountainous, making growth more difficult.

The tribe plans to use the land for housing, powwow grounds, an equestrian center and an outdoor center and RV park. The San Diego Union-Tribune published a large PDF of the proposed development.

Some 600 acres that part of tribe's original plan will be sold to a nature conservancy.
