"As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Kansas statehood, our neighbors in the Citizen Potawatomi Nation remind us they have a second reason to celebrate.
They will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of 1861 between the Potawatomi in Kansas and the U.S. government.
According to a Potawatomi website, the treaty was novel in two ways. In addition to granting tribal land to be owned collectively by the whole tribe, it also offered the option of individual members of the tribe owning their own piece of the land."
