PBS airing The Berenstain Bears cartoon in Lakota language

Public television networks in North Dakota and South Dakota will broadcast episodes of The Berenstain Bears in the Lakota language.

The Lakota Language Consortium, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Prairie Public Broadcasting and South Dakota Public Broadcasting worked to translate the popular cartoon into Lakota. The goal is to keep the language alive for younger generations.

“We need something to get the language to our kids, our youth, our families,” Sunshine Archambault-Carlow, the tribe's education manager, told The Dickinson Press.

At Standing Rock, the youngest fluent speaker is 27.
