Former residential school students have until September 19 to apply for a share in the $1.9 billion settlement in Canada.
As part of the
Common Experience Payment,
every student will receive $10,000 for their first year of attendance. An additional $3,000 will be provided for any additional years.
So far, about 70,000 people have applied for a payment. Outreach workers are looking for more former students as the deadline approaches.
Former students can also seek additional money for sexual, physical and other abuse under the
Independent Assessment Process.
