City tries to annex land owned by Ak-Chin Indian Community

The city of Maricopa, Arizona, is trying to annex land owned by the Ak-Chin Indian Community.

The tribe started the land-into-trust process for about 1,000 acres earlier this year. But the city's annexation request could delay action on the applications.

"At this time, the Ak-Chin community opposes this annexation for several reasons," tribal planner Bart Smith told The Maricopa Monitor.

Landowners near the tribe's property support the annexation. A state law that recently went into effect purports to allow municipalities to annex tribal land without tribal consent.
