Breakaway Mohawk group moves onto property owned by non-Indian

A breakaway group of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York has moved onto 240 acres owned by a non-Indian man.

The Council of the People of the Longhouse says the land belongs to the Mohawk people. The group is using it for housing and a smoke shop.

“We’re not stealing anything,” Roger Jock, a Bear Clan representative, told The Watertown Daily Times. “The land is still there.”

Horst Wuersching bought the land in 1981. He's in court, hoping to get the Mohawks removed.

“These people are a bunch of fools,” Wuersching told the paper. “They have no grounds whatsoever.
