Indian Market working on tax issue as opening day approaches

With the opening of the Santa Fe Indian Market quickly approaching, organizers are working with city and state officials to resolve a tax issue.

According to the state of New Mexico, about 220 Indian artists lacked tax identification numbers or owed back taxes on the sale of their goods. As of Wednesday, the number dwindled to 116 artists, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

The market takes place outside of Indian Country so sales are subject to the state's gross-receipts tax. Organizers are hoping to resolve the issue before buyers start showing up on Saturday morning.
