HUD orders Lumbee Tribe to repay over $98K for misusing funds

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina must repay over $98,000 to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

An audit by HUD found that the tribe misused a grant. Some of the money went to a consulting firm that was hired to assist the tribe with its housing and with its federal recognition effort.

Some money also went to a contractor who was overpaid for developing a handbook for the tribe's Boys and Girls Club. The tribe also must repay some employee travel reimbursements.

"I am glad that we were able to resolve some of these issues with HUD, and it is my intent to file an appeal for the remaining findings," Chairwoman Sharon Hunt said in a statement.
