Rock formation in California to get new name from Pomo legend
Friday, August 5, 2011
The California State Historical Resource Commission is expected to give a new name to a rock formation in Mendocino County.
The rock will be known as Frog Woman Rock. It comes from the Pomo name for the formation, Maatha kawao qhabe.
The Hopland Band of Pomo Indians pushed for the new name, which is based on the legend of a woman with a human face and the body of a frog.
