New Mexico targets tobacco sales by Indian Affairs secretary

New Mexico Attorney General Gary King plans to take action against a store owned by Arthur Allison, a member of the Navajo Nation who serves as Secretary of Indian Affairs for the state, the Associated Press reports.

King has accused Allison of selling cigarettes without a tax stamp at his Star Ranch Store on the reservation. The state also says he's selling brands that aren't licensed in the state.

The Legislature's Tobacco Settlement Revenue Oversight Committee heard from one of King's assistant attorneys yesterday, the AP reported. Despite the controversy, no lawmakers criticized Allison or called for his resignation.

Allison said he's turning over ownership of the store to his son. He said he hasn't received revenues since taking the Cabinet job for Gov. Susana Martinez (R).
