The
St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York had broken ground on its Diabetes Center for Excellence.
The 14,000-square-foot facility will offer diabetes treatment, diabetes prevention, fitness equipment, a kitchen and a wading pool. It will be home to all of the tribe's diabetes programs.
"Nowhere in Indian country has a framework for clinical case management care in diabetes evolved as comprehensively as what we offer at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe," Janine Rourke, the leader of the tribe's "Let's Get Healthy Program," told The Watertown Daily Times.
The tribe has raised nearly $2.95 million of the $3.8 million for the first phase of the center. Another $2 million will be needed for phase two.
Rourke estimates that 20 percent of people on the reservation suffer from diabetes
