"Over a thousand people marched to the Canadian parliament on Tuesday in solidarity with missing and murdered aboriginal women and to bring attention on the alarmingly high rates of violence against Aboriginal women and girls in Canada.
Murdered aboriginal women represent approximately ten per cent of the total number of female homicides in Canada despite the fact that Aboriginal women make up only three per cent of the total female population. Research has found that the intergenerational impact and resulting vulnerabilities of colonization and state policies: such as residential schools and the child welfare system are underlying factors in the outcomes of violence experienced by Aboriginal women and girls.
